Message from the Mayor

October 15 2025
I would like to address some of the concerns and negative statements that seem to surface during an election regarding the current council and administration. While social media offers a valuable platform for open dialogue, it also contains information that is not necessarily accurate and often reflects individual perspectives rather then established facts.

I take pride in what we as a council have accomplished over the past 4 years, for instance, the traffic lights installed on 2A, the establishment of a Wellness Committee that focuses on two pressing community challenges: providing activities for youth and ensuring food accessibility for those in need. Our staff and administration have graciously volunteered their time and some used their vacation days to support these programs. These efforts relied on sponsorship's and volunteers  to minimize any impact on taxpayers.

Regarding the Lakeside Meadows project, it is important to understand that while the development agreement was signed in 2016 the council and administration have been diligently working to move this developer and project forward.
It is essential to understand that we do not have the power to direct developers. After a decade of negotiations without success Council made the decision to expropriate the lands to facilitate development that is vital to this community and to ensure that all future developments are in the best interest of the Town.

We acknowledge that certain matters may be frustrating for residents. However, Council is required by the Municipal Government Act and the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FOIP) to maintain confidentiality on issues concerning land, legal and labor until they are resolved. This is standard practice for all Municipal Councils.

For our community to progress effectively, we must have trained staff in place. I can confidently assure you that all wages for administration, staff and Council members are thoroughly evaluated and aligned with the Alberta Municipal wage surveys.

A couple of years ago Council sought public input on the possibility of reducing the number of Councilors  to lower costs. The overwhelming response from residents was clear that they wanted full representation on Council.

I would like to address the topic of Council meeting times and public engagement; in the past, we held Council meetings at 6:00 PM, and the public attendance was the same as 4:00 PM meetings. It is important to clarify that the council meetings themselves are focused on addressing items that are on the agenda and do not serve as a forum for public participation. Public involvement is encouraged during public hearings, which will be scheduled later in the day and by reaching out to your elected officials whose email addresses are all on our website. Residents wishing to speak before council can be scheduled as a delegation on the meeting agenda.

Finally, I urge everyone to consider the impact of focusing on the negative aspects of social media on our Town, as it can overshadow the many positive elements of our community. Millet is known for its beauty and involvement; these are the qualities we should strive for when talking about our Town.

I sincerely wish all of the candidates good luck in the upcoming election on Oct 20. Please get out and vote so your voice can be heard.
