Description: OPERATOR 1 – PUBLIC WORKS
Reports to: Public Works Coordinator
General Outline
This position performs a variety of tasks relating to the operation and maintenance of municipal water distribution, sanitary sewer collection, storm water systems, street, sidewalk and trail maintenance. Work is performed under limited supervision. Some initiative and judgment is required, with more complex or unusual problems referred to a supervisor. Must be committed to health and safety.

Examples of Work – The following list does not represent an exhaustive list of the expected duties of the position, merely an example of some expected duties.
• Assist in water and sewer system service installation, operation, repair and maintenance;
• Assist in repairing and maintaining storm water systems;
• Complete water meter reading
• Operate heavy equipment such as a grader, wheel loader, backhoe, skid steer, etc.
• Operate a variety of hand and power tools to perform required maintenance and repair;
• Operate a light duty pick-up truck;
• Read underground utility locates and ensure safe digging practices are always being adhered to.
• Self-manage meter reading routes and associated paperwork.
• Maintain, repair and remove snow from municipal streets, alleys, sidewalks, parking lots, and land as required using various machinery and methods;
• Keep accurate records and prepare required reports in a timely fashion;
• Take a regular shift on stand-by as required;
• Operate according to established policies and procedures, including established Occupational Health & Safety Standards
• Contribute to a safe and healthy work environment;
• Embrace and manage change to continually improve processes;
• High quality of work and excellent customer service skills;
• Other duties as may be assigned or required.

Minimum Requirements
• Grade 12 or equivalent
• Valid Class 3 Alberta Driver’s License.
• Physically able to perform required tasks.
• Ability to use discretion regarding confidential matters.
• Experience and/or certification in water/wastewater an asset.
• Ability to deal effectively with the public, employees and others in a courteous and tactful manner and maintain positive and harmonious relationships amongst all with whom the employee may come in contact.
